Europe needs to catch up with Asia in battery manufacturing

Europe needs to catch up with Asia in battery manufacturing. It has to import almost all the raw materials and in particular import or manufacture its own graphite.

A lithium battery consists of a lithium cathode, a graphite anode, an intermediate liquid, the electrolyte and a separator membrane.

Europe has to import its nickel, lithium and manganese. It has two graphite producers, the French Carbone Savoie and the German SGL Carbon. Synthetic graphite is more efficient than natural graphite.

Observers believe that the European battery industry has everything it needs to succeed. The European Commission predicts that by 2030 European demand will require the production of 10 to 20 giga-plants. (NDLR is a production capacity of between 200 and 500 GWh per year).
