Development of direct energy purchases by companies
The year 2019 is shaping up to be another record year for the purchase of renewable energy by companies around the world. So far (in 2019), companies have signed contracts for 8.6 gigawatts of clean energy.
in the world, according to the latest figures published by Bloomberg New Energy Finance. This compares with 7.2 GW of energy subscribed during the same period in 2019. For the whole of 2018, the volume subscribed had reached 13 GW, and the United States had purchased 8.5 GW. This trend continues with 6 GW purchased in 2019, representing 70% of global transactions. Texas accounts for 40% of American activity in 2019 due to its wind and solar resources.
Virtual power purchase agreements remain the default choice for many companies. They bypass power companies and the green pricing schemes they offer. Virtual power purchase agreements also allow companies to avoid the animosity that used to exist in the company-customer relationship in some regions, where companies seek to buy more renewable energy than they can manage.
