India wants to step up its efforts to manufacture batteries

The Indian government wants to set up a battery manufacturing capacity of up to 50 GW per year (instead of the current 50 GW).

of 40 GW so far). Indian or foreign manufacturers are invited to set up factories. Successful bidders would benefit from exemption or reduction of import and export duties.

The government has already asked states to identify land availability and potential exemptions for battery manufacturers. A total of 5 to 20 sites would be selected. Companies would be invited to bid for the establishment of battery plants at the selected sites.

India currently imports almost all of its batteries and cells. With its plan, the government hopes to reduce the country's dependence on imports while ensuring that 30 per cent of road vehicles are electric by 2030.
