Selenium significantly improves CdTe thin films

The addition of selenium on a thin layer of cadmium telluride considerably increases the efficiency of solar cells. The main CdTe solar panels currently on the market have a conversion efficiency of approximately

17 %. The selenium alloy in the material has brought this value to the current world record of 22.1 per cent set by First Solar in 2016. However, the mechanism for increasing the conversion rate is not yet known.
