Opposition to 1,000 hectare solar power plant project
The official announcement on 11 January of a 1 GW solar power plant project in the Gironde region of France, which will involve cutting down 1,000 hectares of forest, is met with opposition from environmental activists.
The promoters (Engie and Neoen within the Horizeo project) claim that they will replace the 1,000 hectares cut down.

Will a GW power plant be built in France?
A 1,000-hectare solar project in the Gironde (near the Cestas power station), called Horizéo, would be studied by Engie and Neoen. With a size of about 1 GW, it would be installed on a forest that would have to be cleared. It would be accompanied by a digital data storage data centre. It could also house a green hydrogen production unit, a battery storage centre to smooth the supply, as well as agricultural production.
The removal of such an area of forest is moving the local residents who have formed the environmental protection association Sepanso, says France-Bleue Gironde.

Floating solar power plants are gaining in importance
Bank financing is now essential to launch new floating solar projects.
This is because floating photovoltaics has gained momentum in recent years. It represented less than 1% of global solar demand at the end of 2019. It will double by 2022
Floating power plant projects are multiplying. At the very beginning and until the end of 2014, the power plants had a few dozen kWp and could be financed with equity. This was the case in Japan. China has quickly evolved towards large floating power plants.
Now, the multiplication of large projects requires developers to obtain external financing. This requires lenders to have a good knowledge of the seabed!

Floating power plants (3rd part): an increasingly local use
Initial installations were carried out on ponds, reservoirs or lakes. They provided energy from neighbouring users.
Today, power plants are most often installed in the vicinity of a lake or reservoir.
