In brief in Europe: Spain close to 20 GW, 1 GW installed in Italy in the first half of the year, less than 5 cents per kWh in Greece
On 14 September, large-scale PV capacity in Spain had reached 17 GW, with a further 2.5 GW in self-consumption. Spain is about to reach the 20 GW mark.
This means that solar energy has overtaken hydropower, which until now has been in third place with 17.1 GW. But PV is still behind wind power, with 29.5 GW, and combined-cycle power plants, with 26.2 GW.

Italy deployed 1 GW of PV in the first half of the year (compared with 0.4 GW in thefirst half of 2021). This brings installed capacity to 23 GW at the end of June. Rooftop PV continues to drive the Italian solar market: PV projects smaller than 1 MW accounted for most of the newly deployed capacity, at 686 MW. Solar farms larger than 1 MW are finally showing the first signs of a real recovery, but accounted for only 375 MW of the total.
