Private power sales contracts proliferate in South America

Private power sales contracts are proliferating in South America: a growing number of deals have been concluded recently. They provide for the sale of solar energy to large energy consumers. Private contracts

are multiplying in the different countries because the construction of non-subsidized power plants is now becoming profitable. Auctions for large renewable energy projects are still being held.

In Brazil, private contracts are signed between the Portuguese EDP and the bank branches of the Banco do Brasil.

In Panama: 150 MW will be built by Spain's Avanzalia and TSK Ingeniería y Electricidad for several large customers.

In Mexico: a 130 MW installation will be built by Engie for the steel producer Gerdau Corsa. The Balam Fund has completed the construction of 35 MW for the pharmaceutical chain Farmacias del Ahorro.

Colombia: Celsia is building a PV installation on the roof of Bogota airport. Celsia also plans to build 80 MW in the city of Los Santos, and 9 MW in the municipality of Santa Rosa de Lima, in the department of Bolívar. Colombia is the only country in Latin America that has not yet organised an auction for renewable energy.

Chile: many private contracts have already been signed. One of the latest is the Engie project in the north of Antofagasta. Other supply contracts have been signed by mining companies. These contracts are going to multiply because there are no large auctions and because only projects of less than 9 MW are taken over by the PMGD programme.

Argentina: There have been no private contracts in recent weeks. The government suspended all auctions in August
