RE in Germany in 2017

In 2017, in Germany, renewable energies reached a record level in 2017: 36.1% of electricity was supplied by wind, biomass, solar and hydroelectric power plants.

This is 3.6% more than in 2016, according to Agora Energiewende. Wind energy contributed most to this, due to its continued expansion and the good wind conditions in 2017. For the first time, wind energy produced more electricity than coal and nuclear power. These have fallen to the lowest level since 1990.

However, greenhouse gas emissions stagnated in 2017 for the third consecutive year instead of declining as expected. They increased in the transport, construction and industry sectors. The main reason is the increase in energy consumption. Last year, 0.8% more energy (electricity, diesel fuel and natural gas) was consumed compared with 2016.

German electricity sales abroad have also increased: more than 60 terawatt hours of electricity were exported in 2017, which corresponds to around 10% of the electricity consumed in Germany. The reason: Germany has the second lowest market price for electricity in Europe. German coal and gas power plant operators have an interest in selling their electricity to their neighbours. The total turnover from these exports amounts to 1.4 billion euros. Hours with negative electricity tariffs, which often attract special attention, are, on the other hand, negligible in the overall balance sheet.
