Lead-acid battery manufacturers want to improve their product to withstand lithium competition
Faced with the increasingly hegemonic dominance of lithium batteries, a consortium has been formed to improve the performance of lead batteries for electric vehicles and residential storage. It hopes to have access to $2 million a year to carry out its research. The aim is to restore the position of lead batteries as rechargeable batteries. Sales of lead batteries reached $43 billion in 2013 and accounted for 68% of the sector's sales.
The storage market will continue to grow as a result of telecommunications, data networks and economic growth. Lead-acid batteries could meet the requirements of these applications and benefit from their traditional advantages (low cost, alternative to rechargeable batteries).
