The rebound effect of solar energy.

Researchers from Australia and Vietnam have analysed the short- and long-term dynamics of the rebound effect of solar energy.

The rebound effect is a reduction in the expected gains from a more resource-efficient technology resulting from a behavioural or systemic change.

For residential solar energy, this effect is equal to the change in a household's electricity consumption resulting from PV electricity generation.

"If households that adopt solar panels significantly change their energy consumption patterns, it is possible that the overall carbon emissions associated with energy consumption will be relatively unchanged. This phenomenon is known as a 'rebound effect', where the increase in supply fails to induce a substitution between solar energy and grid energy", explain the scientists.
