Disappointment among professionals following speeches by the Prime Minister and his Secretary General

The Secretary General for Ecological Planning, who reports to the Prime Minister, told the French National Assembly's Sustainable Development Committee: "The government has always been very clear.

(...) on the fact that we would need more electricity, in moderate proportions between now and 2030, and increasingly so up to 2050. And that there was no debate on the fact that all additional electricity production by 2035 would come exclusively from renewable energies, and that we therefore needed to accelerate drastically", he said.

In a Tribune, André Joffre reports on yesterday's General Policy speech by the new Prime Minister, Gabriel Attal. It was eagerly awaited by the political class and also by energy professionals and environmental associations.

Nobody expected such a poor speech on a subject that is nevertheless a major priority for the future of French and European citizens.

Several bills have been announced, but none of them concerns energy and the climate. The recent bill on energy sovereignty seems to have been forgotten.

The Multiannual Energy Programme (PPE), which should be the subject of a legislative text in application of the 2021 Climate and Resilience Act, will therefore be reduced to the level of a decree without any parliamentary debate.

In the light of Gabriel Attal's statements on 30 January, we can have the worst fears about the content of this PPE.

To sum up the Prime Minister's message, nuclear power would provide the main solution to our energy and climate problems, and would allow the French population to make no changes to their consumption patterns."

For the SER, Gabriel Attal's general policy speech is "a huge disappointment".
