A cobalt-free lithium-ion battery

Japanese scientists have developed a cobalt-free lithium-ion battery with high energy density. This new battery

produces an energy density around 60% greater than that of conventional lithium-ion batteries for an equivalent weight and volume, and withstands 1,000 cycles.

The inclusion of cobalt in batteries is problematic due to its scarcity and concentration in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
