European Commission approves aid schemes for Italy and Hungary

This week, the European Commission (EC) approved aid schemes in Italy and Hungary to support renewable energy projects.

Italy has taken two measures for installations of less than one megawatt: the first is a preferential tariff on electricity consumed by self-consumers and renewable energy communities. The cost will be paid over a 20-year period, with a budget of €3.5 billion. It will be financed by a levy on the electricity bill of all consumers. The 2nd is an investment grant of up to 40% of the costs. Eligible projects will have to be completed by 30 June 2026 to qualify for FRR funding, and will have to be located in municipalities with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants.

The programme drawn up by Hungary comprises 13 reforms and 16 investments. Their implementation will contribute to the European Union's strategy of reducing its dependence on fossil fuels by 2030.
