Kesterite solar cell

Chinese researchers have designed a kesterite-kesterite solar cell (CZTSSe) with an optimised structure that could potentially achieve efficiencies close to those of crystalline silicon photovoltaic devices.

Using simulation, the tandem device achieved a power conversion efficiency of 23.96%, an open-circuit voltage of 1.637 V, a short-circuit current of 20.29 mA/cm² and a fill factor of 72.05%.

However, kesterite is less efficient than CIGS in mass production. The world record for such cells is 12.6%, achieved for large-area devices by Japanese thin-film producer Solar Frontier in 2013.
