Non-aqueous redox flow battery

Researchers at the University of Cincinnati have developed a non-aqueous lithium-based redox flow battery without a high-voltage membrane, based on an all-organic two-phase system that offers superior performance under both static and flow conditions.

The new system offers many advantages over its liquid cousins, including an initial average discharge voltage of 3.45 V.

A particularly significant improvement is the elimination of the membrane separator, which represents up to 30% of the cost of the system.

Its energy density is around 33 Wh/l.
