Under the name "BTRY" (pronounced "battery"), researchers in the "Thin Films and Photovoltaics" laboratory at Empa's Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research are aiming to market a solid-state battery based on metallic lithium. This battery can be charged in a minute, is non-flammable and has a lifespan ten times longer. Empa has succeeded in stacking the cells in thin layers one on top of the other, thereby increasing their capacity. They now want to market it.

Form Energy's iron-air battery technology can provide 100 hours of discharge at competitive costs compared with conventional power plants. This is enough time to get through prolonged production lulls, enabling New York City to meet its decarbonisation and grid reliability targets.
