A new consortium to create a PV industry in Germany

Three German companies have joined forces to build a vertically integrated PV manufacturing capacity in Europe. They are solar panel distributor Wattkraft Systems

the photovoltaic panel manufacturer Heckert Solar and the solar glass supplier Interfloat Corporation. They plan to have an annual production capacity of 2.8 GW of panels and 5 GW of silicon, wafers and solar cells. The project will cost €2 billion over 24 months. The consortium aims to cover at least 90% of German added value in the development of panels and cells, while reducing global dependence.

They have submitted their project to the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK). Several companies have already expressed an interest, including First Solar and Meyer Burger.

Editor's note It should come as no surprise that established companies such as First Solar and Meyer Burger are applying. That associations are forming is more surprising, as they will be missing parts of their business. There is also the question of the association's management. However, with the support of the German government, several groups are taking the plunge.
