Is there a match between energy production and demand in industry?

American researchers have compared the production of solar energy installed on factory roofs with the needs of the factories below. Their aim was to look at the match between energy production and consumption.

The industrial sector accounts for 38% of global energy consumption and 37% of greenhouse gas emissions.

The researchers concluded that rooftop solar panels could meet the electricity needs of between 5% and 35% of US manufacturing sectors, depending on the season. They found that furniture, textile and clothing manufacturers stand to benefit the most, even though they account for only 2% of industrial electricity consumption in the United States and 6% of floor space. At the moment, the industry produces just 0.1% of the renewable energy it consumes.

Editor's note Industry and the tertiary sector were presented as the sectors most capable of using energy production simultaneously. It seems that this is not the case for the manufacturing sector.
