Next new cycle path trial in Belgium

The Dutch province of North Brabant will deploy a 500-metre-long line of solar bicycles and test their performance over a period of 5 years. The PV system will be integrated into the top layer of asphalt and will comprise 600 solar panels.

Over a period of 5 years, experts from the provincial government will assess the resistance of the solar panels to the mechanical stresses applied by pedestrians and cyclists, the cost of maintaining them and the energy yield of the PV system.

Although solar roads were installed in the Netherlands in 2016 and 2020, the feasibility and economic viability of solar roads remain controversial. The Dutch government's plan to test the viability of solar power generation on road infrastructure.

The Dutch authorities are finding it difficult to identify areas on which to deploy large-scale photovoltaic power plants because of the scarcity of land. Research institutes and private companies have tried to prove the feasibility of solar projects on non-agricultural land, including dykes, roofs and water surfaces on land and at sea.
