Walker Q1: decline in turnover and profits

Walker Chemie's silicon sales inQ1 were down 16% to €441 million compared toQ1 2022 and down 23% compared to Q4 2022. This is the consequence of

cautious customers buying less silicon in a phase of falling prices

Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation fell by 56% to €98 million in the first quarter of 2023, compared to €225 million in the first quarter of 2022.

The second quarter is not expected to be better than the first. It would only be in the second half of the year that second half of the year that sales are expected to pick up. For the year as a whole, silicon sales are expected to be between 1.6 and 1.8 billion euros, with an ebitda of 300 to 500 million euros.

Editor's note Two factors explain this sluggish start to the year: there is a surplus of silicon in China. As a result, orders to Walker are becoming scarce. On the other hand, prices are falling, which is encouraging buyers to defer their purchases in order to acquire cheaper silicon.
