Another way to produce lithium
Researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and EnBW have produced an ion sieve to capture lithium from an oxide of lithium and manganese.
They have used it to select and then retain (adsorb) lithium from geothermal brines. In this way, geothermal energy provides a sustainable supply of electricity and heat, as well as, secondarily, regional lithium extraction.
In future, the use of local sources of lithium may help to meet the growing demand for this vital light metal as an energy storage material.
