Fraunhofer IEE believes that artificial intelligence will be needed to manage decentralised generation
The Fraunhofer Institute IEE (for energy economics and energy systems technology) has completed the "K-ES" (cognitive energy systems) research project.
They found that in a decentralised energy system based on renewable energies, production and consumption can no longer be reconciled as easily as before.
In order to coordinate complex processes in real time, the energy system must develop an awareness of its own state and be able to react in an automated fashion.
The conclusion drawn by the fifty or so researchers who studied 44 flagship projects is that the use of artificial intelligence will make it easier to manage the energy transition. It will take charge of complex control processes that would not be possible with current staff and technology.
The benefits of artificial intelligence were examined in particular for grid operation, forecasting, resilience, power electronics, energy management, energy trading and other future areas of energy supply.

Editor's note The complexity of managing distributed generation while maintaining the grid at 50 hertz has led to the use of this new technology. But this technology still needs to be sufficiently mastered! It may be that by associating distributed generation with this technology from the outset, we will be able to codify and organise it so that it can manage increasing complexity.
