European research project for tandem cells

A European consortium led by Germany's Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB) is launching a research project to advance silicon-perovskite technology towards mass production. A pilot line

for the production of tandems will be set up at its European headquarters in Thalheim, Germany.

The project will identify and remove barriers to accelerating the mass production and market penetration of this technology. One of the project's objectives is to minimise losses of scale by using innovative materials and equipment. It will also develop processors and thin-film deposition equipment, with the ultimate goal of building new production capacity in Europe.

Editor's note: European political authorities believe that research will help catch up with Chinese industry. This is the opinion of people who do not understand the industrial world. The industrial world is made up of multiple aspects: a production tool, a commercial network, a reputation and an efficient organisation. Technological innovation is only one component, and often the last to be acquired, because it is useless if there is no commercial network or machines to produce. Generally, it is not the revolutionary process that is needed, but the ability to produce a standard product at low cost to achieve success.
