This week's highlights, as of 20 November 2022

The key point

China has gradually gained dominance in photovoltaics and batteries, two products of the future, to the point where it now holds 70% to 90% of world production. The realisation of this domination came with the pandemic, which disrupted production, road and sea transport. The cut-off of Russian gas supplies showed the danger of depending on an overly dominant supplier. Europe has not yet developed a comprehensive response to this domination. The United States has done so. But the task is immense because it is necessary to practically reconstitute a complete economy with factories, but also to have the know-how, and to produce objects that are competitive in terms of quality and price. The challenge is huge.

The first important point is that demand for electrolyzers is expected to increase 120-fold in eight years. Prices should collapse quickly. The gas will then have to be used, but this will require a lot of development and investment

Hydrogen is at the beginning of its historic expansion

Green hydrogen reaches the threshold of mass production

Secondary point: battery manufacturers are already fighting to obtain lithium, cobalt and nickel, even though we are at the beginning of battery use. We wonder how we will find enough metals to meet the needs of electric vehicles.

The need for battery materials is such that buyers are facing a shortage

Issue 3 point (subsidiary) While panels have a life span of thirty years, inverters have a life span of ten to fifteen years. Their lifespan depends on their location and the climatic conditions. The aim is to match the lifetime of the inverters to that of the panels.
