Solar and wind power have eased Europe's drought this summer

Solar and wind power have helped to mitigate the effects of the drought in the EU, as there has been a decrease in

21% of hydroelectric generation and 19% of available nuclear capacity. Wind and solar generated a record 24% of the EU's electricity between March and September.

Ember and E3G claim that solar and wind generated almost a quarter of the EU's electricity between March and September 2022, up from 21% last year, with a 13% increase over 2021. This avoided the use of 8 billionm3 of gas at a cost of €11 billion (based on the average gas price between March and September).

Editor's note: There was a record production of solar and wind in 2022. The progress is slow every year and we are far from a significant contribution of these renewable energies to the European Union's consumption. It will take many years before this contribution reaches 50%. We may want to. Time is the guide to achievement.
