Faced with a likely energy shortage this winter, SER recommends the use of renewable energies

The Syndicat des Energies Renouvelables (SER) (Renewable Energy Association) has issued a warning about the stoppage of gas imports from Russia and the forecast situation for the coming winter, as described by RTE. It believes that "renewable energies are the only short-term solution for strengthening our security of supply".

It warns of "the current context of sharp rises in the cost of raw materials and rising interest rates. This poses a major risk to a large number of renewable energy projects: for example, more than 2 GW of solar capacity and more than 5 TWh of biomethane production capacity are currently at risk because of the inflationary context".

Editor's note The SER is well aware of the main characteristic of renewable energies, whether solar or wind. Its main characteristic is the slowness with which projects are carried out, and the small volume built each year. 1 GW of solar PV was built annually in France during the 2010 decade! It's obvious that we need to speed up installations. But to suggest that emergency measures can speed up construction is to deny this fundamental fact.

What is true is that rising interest rates will slow down or make it more difficult to install RE. This is also a feature that has been overlooked in recent years, when interest rates were very low and therefore had little impact on projects. Now we have to reckon with increased financial costs, to which we can add inflation, which is affecting sea freight, the price of panels and, in the near future, personnel costs.

The economic climate is becoming more difficult for solar and wind power, which also have to fight to find sites.

Asking for help can be useful, but there's one overriding principle: HELP YOURSELF, THE SKY WILL HELP YOU!
