Big order for Meyer Burger

Regarding the contract with the American DESRI, Erfurt said it was a "very important step" because it enabled the company to enter the high-growth segment of large-scale power plants with "one of the most renowned players in the field of renewable energy in the USA". Discussions began long before the LRA was published. For example, Meyer Burger was working on the hypothesis of industrial-scale production of panels manufactured in the USA. The new law makes the situation much more favourable.

In his view, the split between residential (2 GW) and large-scale (1 GW) production is healthy because the residential segment is still growing worldwide. The ideal is to maintain a balance between the two types of installation.

More demand than capacity

According to Erfurt, the biggest challenge for Meyer Burger is that market demand is outstripping available production volume. He adds: 'We are currently in allocation mode, so we allocate our available production volumes to our customers. At the moment, we're not really on-boarding any additional customers beyond the relationships we have established."

Despite higher than expected average selling prices, demand for its residential panels has remained strong, while the manufacturer is already allocating production volumes to its customers for the second quarter of 2023.

The CEO continued: "We all thought that rising raw material costs would sooner or later reach a level that would fundamentally affect market demand. That never happened; the opposite happened."

The industrial installation in the US is considerably strengthening the company, especially since the new law reduces manufacturing costs and an industrial dynamism in photovoltaic production has appeared and is developing. This will help the development, albeit laborious due to the difficult supply situation, of the European parent company.
