Global developers between July 2020 and July 2021

Solar projects in operation or under development distinguish Lightsource BP as the largest developer in 2020-2021 with over 23.5 GW of the 125 GW completed, according to Mercom Capital Group

Solar projects under construction or under power purchase agreement (PPA) Canadian Solar is the world's largest developer with 22.2 GW, followed by Lightsource BP with 20.9 GW and Brookfield Renewable Partners with 17.3 GW, out of a total of just over 100 gigawatts.

Operational solar projects (i.e. projects that are in operation) total 27 GW, divided between ten companies. Enel Green Power leads with 5 GW, followed by Indian developer Adani Green Energy with 4.9 GW (thanks to the acquisition of 1.7 GW from SB Energy). Engie is in third place with 3.5 GW.

Several companies that were in the top 10 in the past have dropped out of this year's list due to lower activity. This is the case of GCL New Energy, which was number 1 last year.

In 2021, there was a significant increase in project acquisition worldwide, with over 64 GW, compared to 40 GW in 2020, a year that had already seen an explosion in mergers and acquisitions.

Geography:

Latin America is the preferred region for the top ten solar developers with 38% of global capacity, followed by Asia Pacific (APAC) with 24%, Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) with 20%, and North America with around 18%.

Editor's note It is strange that no Chinese companies are mentioned in these rankings. This is probably a lack of information about their achievements.
