Further increase in global RE investments in the first half of the year

Global investment in renewable energy reached $226 billion in the first half of 2022, setting a new record

for the first six months of a year, according to BloombergNEF. In solar alone, investments reached $120 billion, up 33% in the first half of 2021. Wind power raised $84 billion (+16%). Both sectors are suffering from rising steel and silicon costs, supply difficulties and rising interest rates. However, the attraction of investors is not waning, largely because of the high price of energy.

Chinese investment in solar has totalled $41 billion (+173% over last year).

Editor's note: the investments in the first half of the year were studied, developed and launched in the more or less recent past. They are therefore the effect of a long-standing economic situation. It is not certain that the growth rate of the solar sector will continue at this pace in the near future.

Rising panel prices (with possible shortages or import restrictions) and higher interest rates could dampen investment intentions.

What will determine the attitude will be the energy price on the wholesale market. If it remains very high, as it is at present, there is still an incentive to build power plants for resale on the free market. If energy prices were to fall significantly, the attractiveness of renewable energies would decrease.
