Scientists have experimented with a concept known as the "hot junction" carrier cell, which has the potential to exceed current theoretical limits in terms of efficiency. The cell modelled by the researchers is more resistant to "imperfections" than previous attempts, broadening the range of possible materials. The concept promises cell efficiencies well in excess of 30%, even for a single-junction device.

The theory has been around for several decades, but to date no hot-carrier cell has been successfully fabricated. The 'imperfections' that would limit the practical performance of such a device, compared with models of what is theoretically possible, are not yet well understood.

Taiwan's Eterbright Solar has developed a solar tile based on copper, indium, gallium and selenium (CIGS) cells for building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV). The ePower tile has a power conversion efficiency of 14.9%. It comes in two formats: 26.5 W and 56 W.

Sun powered systems, s.r.o., a young Slovakian company, has developed and is marketing a photovoltaic arm that supplies off-grid energy, particularly for weed control, with a spacing of 30 cm or 60 cm. The arm comes in various sizes, from 6 m to manage 100 m², to 18 m for 1,000 m².

"The photovoltaic arm provides the owner with off-grid power. This is useful for further processing vegetables, preparing ready-to-use vegetable products or packaging."
