Interview with Cemil Seber (Managing Director of REC Solar EMEA): Our future is in heterojunction
REC Solar has eliminated lead from its Alpha Pure and Alpha Pure-R panels. REC uses a lead-free paste, whereas silver paste contains some lead. Another place where lead is used
is on the cross-connectors, where lead is used for soldering. Also, in general, lead is used for soldering in the junction box. In the Alpha Pure-R, the cross-connectors are not soldered with lead and there is no lead solder in the junction box. Lead is no longer used in the Alpha Pure series of panels.
Initially, heterojunction production was supported by Meyer Burger technology. Since then, REC Solar has developed other methods that are still based on REC's proprietary foil and wire.
To date, REC has produced nearly 1.5 million HJT cells since 2019. HJT also has fewer production steps than other cell technologies. When good process control is in place, production is very stable. REC is excelling in the industrialisation of these new technologies and is ahead of its competitors.
In India, REC is building a factory with a capacity to produce one gigawatt of cells and panels. Parent company Reliance is looking both upstream and downstream and wants to deploy hundreds of gigawatts of PV. At the moment we are planning and reviewing our options for the US and Europe.

REC Group wants to double the heterojunction panel production capacity of its Singapore plant to 1.2 GW. It will produce the latest version of its panels, the Alpha Pure-R, which will be available in three power ratings: 410Wp, 420Wp and 430Wp. Production is scheduled to start in August.
REC Group uses heterojunction technology, which has the most potential in terms of power density and efficiency.
After its acquisition by India's Reliance Industries for $771 million at the end of 2021, REC Group wants to reach a production capacity of 5 GW in Singapore. It plans to launch a cell and panel manufacturing facility in India, which will have a multi-gigawatt production capacity. Production is expected to start in just over a year.

Editor's note: The industrial and financial strength of the shareholder Reliance suggests that a serious competitor to the best Chinese panel manufacturers could be formed. Moreover, REC has announced that it has mastered the heterojunction technology. It lacks the mass production to be ahead of the Chinese, and constitute an alternative to the products of the Middle Kingdom. The emergence of this competition will take a few years.
