Europe's determination to replace fossil fuels with renewables

The Member States of the European Union (EU) are planning to increase the use of renewable energies to replace fossil-fuel-based electricity generation, while COVID-19, soaring gas prices and the war in Ukraine are putting pressure on the EU.

on countries to switch to cleaner, cheaper energy sources.

The European Union has moved the energy transition up a gear. The elimination of expensive fossil fuels is under consideration. According to Ember, "There is a consensus that accelerating wind and solar installations can help the EU avoid multiple crises."

The European Commission's recent REPowerEU plan targets 69% of electricity from renewables and 740 GW-dc of solar installed by 2030. "Europe now recognises that fossil fuels are synonymous with volatility. The ambition to reduce dependence on fossil fuels now puts countries on the path to greater security."
