1st critical opinion on REPowerEU: an eightfold increase in renewable energy installations per year

A third critical opinion on REPowerEU: annual European installations should be increased eightfold and carbon captured from the air.

Europe will need 400 GW of new solar and wind installations per year between 2025 and 2035.

to help limit the rise in global temperature to 1.5°C, in line with the Paris Agreement, according to academics in Denmark and Berlin. This compares with annual installations of 50 GW.

They point out that the electricity grid will need to be strengthened to accommodate the flood of intermittently-generating renewable energies that will be required. Power-to-X technology, including green hydrogen production, will also be needed to power hard-to-power industries such as aviation, shipping and freight. Clean hydrogen will be needed to help offset the intermittency of energy supply from solar and wind farms.

There is no way of achieving a net-zero economy in Europe by the middle of the century without the technology to capture carbon from the air. This is the main conclusion of researchers from Danish and German universities.

Editor's note: Each consultancy needs to add its own personal touch to its projections. Here, it's hard to see how we could manage to increase annual renewable energy installations eightfold in such a short space of time (2025-2035). As always, the studies throw out figures (in this case 400 GW) without us knowing how they were arrived at. Yet these figures form the basis of the study's reasoning and conclusions. On the basis of these 400 GW, we can be sure that we won't get there. What consequences will this have?
