The European Solar Manufacturing Council focuses on cutting-edge PV technologies

The European Solar Manufacturing Council (ESMC) has launched a major project of common European interest (IPCEI) for photovoltaics. It aims to mobilise support from EU Member States. It aims to develop advanced solar manufacturing technologies and promote their commercialisation.

IPCEI-PV has brought together senior representatives from the European Commission, Member States and the photovoltaic industry to examine the current manufacturing landscape in the EU, and to define the next steps in this project.

The EU Solar PV Industrial Alliance will map the availability of financial support, attract private investment, facilitate dialogue and connect producers and suppliers.

The ESMC said the IPCEI-PV framework was designed to "ensure the long-term competitiveness of the European photovoltaic manufacturing industry".s photovoltaic manufacturing industry by mobilising the support of EU Member States for innovative and breakthrough photovoltaic technologies."

PV Tech of 23 May 2022

Editor's note It is easy to understand why the REPowerEU programme barely mentions the PV industry. The "Council", as it calls itself, prefers to wait for the Member States to look at its "case", to support its action and to develop cutting-edge technologies and promote their commercialisation. As the governments have other, far more urgent matters to deal with, the industry will be waiting a long time for government decisions to be taken.

The photovoltaic sector should not expect anything from a research body that focuses on cutting-edge technology but forgets about the production of panels that can be used every day.

This probably reflects deep-seated differences in strategy within the industry, which is unable to adopt a common position to influence decisions, and which is relying on what all players can accept: the development of cutting-edge technologies.
