In brief batteries: redox flow batteries, doubling the life of batteries, sodium-ion batteries

Spanish researchers are developing a 10 kW/20 kWh vanadium redox flow battery. A 50 kW battery will be developed at a later date.

Researchers at the University of Queensland have developed a new nanotechnology that could double the life of high-voltage lithium-ion batteries, paving the way for denser and cheaper energy storage solutions. A thin cathode material reduces corrosion in lithium ion batteries and has demonstrated improved cycling stability at high voltage, with capacity retention of almost 80% after 1,000 cycles.

Researchers at Argonne National Laboratory have discovered that sodium-ion batteries undergo a degenerative effect when cathode materials are created. This could have a significant impact on the performance of the batteries. They found that a "structural earthquake" occurs during rapid cooling when the cathode is created. This disturbs the atomic composition of the material.
