Tandem cells to be marketed within two years?

Tandem solar cells, where a layer of perovskite is integrated on top of a silicon solar cell, have developed rapidly to reach efficiencies close to 30%. The first cells to go on sale will be

probably within the next two years.

Scientists led by the Fraunhofer ISE examined five different silicon cell concepts similar to those in mass production today. They found that, with some optimisation, these could achieve efficiencies of up to 30.4%.

The researchers most often chose heterojunction cells (HJTs), as they offer the simplest route to high efficiency. However, most silicon cells currently produced use PERC technology.

Several of the cell designs studied used tunnel oxide passivation, which makes them close to the TOPCon cells currently being introduced in large-scale production.
