In brief: lithium production in Europe + carbon-neutral logistics warehouse

The aim of the European EuGeLi project is to develop on an industrial scale a process for the co-production of lithium and energy from geothermal brines in the Rhine Graben. The first battery-grade lithium carbonate has just been produced.

Eramet, which is coordinating the project, and IFPEN (IFP Énergies Nouvelles, the successor to the Institut Français du Pétrole) have developed a specific extraction process. This consists of extraction columns filled with an adsorption material to selectively separate the lithium from the brine. The water is then reinjected into the subsoil while exploiting the geothermal resource. The next stage will be to optimise the economic production model.

Inauguration of a carbon-neutral logistics warehouse powered by solar energy and storage. The 12,000 m² building has been fitted with a 480 kWp rooftop PV plant and 304 kWh lithium batteries. It produces more electricity than it consumes. In addition, iodide lighting has been replaced by LEDs and gas-fired heating by air/air heat pumps.
