The French Senate examines agrovoltaics
The Senate has adopted a motion for a resolution to develop agrivoltaics, which involves combining secondary photovoltaic production with primary agricultural production in order to optimise food production.
The Senate
- Proposes
to include agrivoltaics in the Energy Code.
- Calls on the Commission de Régulation de l'Energie (French Energy Regulatory Commission) to set up a dedicated call for tenders.
- Calls on the government to allow farmers access to European CAP aid, by amending point IV of Article 8 of the Order of 9 October 2015.
- Calls on the government to enable farmland to be reclaimed by directing part of the income generated by photovoltaic energy production.

Editor's note The Senate's concern for agri-voltaics is sympathetic. However, as far as we know, while there are studies underway on the effects of solar panels on crops, none of them mention the results of these studies, either because the results are too good or because they are not convincing.
As a result, because there is a lot of talk about it, but no figures, it is believed that the result is twofold (one from agriculture, the other from solar panels). The probable result is close to 1 to 1.3 because the cost of the panels, especially when placed high up, must absorb a large part of the gains, because the opening/closing mechanism is delicate and the mastery of how the system works has not yet been acquired, making the management of the panels tricky.
In today's world, all it takes is one rumour or belief for everyone to jump on board.
