Batteries: Northvolt starts up Europe's first gigafactory in Sweden

The Swedish company Northvolt has started production of its "gigafactory" for electric batteries in Sweden. It is the first in Europe.

At full capacity, annual production of 60 gigawatt hours will equip one million electric vehicles with batteries each year.

Northvolt has $30 billion in orders from BMW, Volkswagen and Volvo, with whom it plans to build a second huge factory in Europe.

Its shareholders include Volkswagen, Goldman Sachs, BMW, Nordic funds, Spotify founder and Swedish billionaire Daniel Ek.

Faced with China, which dominates the market, Europe accounted for only 3% of global battery production in 2020. It has the ambition to catch up and is aiming for 25% of the market by the end of the decade, with several factory openings.
