A groundless, electrolyte-free battery for vehicle integrated solar applications

A massless battery for in-vehicle solar applications

Swedes have developed a structural battery that is supposed to offer 'massless' storage, as its weight disappears

when integrated into the supporting structure. The device has an energy density of 24 Wh/kg (about 20% higher than comparable lithium-ion batteries currently available). It is designed to be easily integrated into solar-powered vehicles. This structural battery has a carbon fibre that acts as an electrode, conductor and carrier material. Structural batteries are materials with electrochemical energy storage properties that can be integrated into the structure of an object such as an electric vehicle or a drone. Their main purpose is to reduce the weight of the object itself.

The battery consists of a carbon fibre (CF) negative electrode and an aluminium foil supported positive electrode separated by a glass fibre (GF) separator in a structural battery electrolyte matrix material (SBE).
