Where did the 97% drop in battery costs come from over 20 years?
In twenty years (between 1991 and 2021), the cost of lithium-ion batteries has fallen by 97%. Improvements in the technology
Research and development is responsible for at least 50% of the price reductions achieved so far (of which 38% is related to increasing cell charge density; 18% to reducing the cost of cathode materials; 14% to reducing non-material costs; and 9.5% from improved charge utilisation. 18% from reduced cathode material costs; 14% from reduced non-hardware costs; and 9.5% from improved load utilisation. Economies of scale in production reduced costs by 30%; learning-by-doing in battery manufacturing and design reduced costs by 2%, says the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
