Advocating for rooftop solar installations

In their study, Schneider Electric and BloombergNEF urge governments to unlock the enormous potential of rooftop solar around the world.

Giving an example from California,

the study indicates that the five-year payback period for solar panels installed on buildings in the state is cut in half for systems installed at the initial construction of buildings, due to reduced marketing, sales, labour and construction costs.

In France, the rate of return on investment for a solar installation on an existing house would be 18.5%, while it would be 28% for solar systems mandated on new construction.

The installation potential for residential or professional use would reach 2 TW by 2050, plus 1 TW of storage.

In France, incentives have enabled the installation of 0.5 GW of panels on roofs. French companies benefit from a nine-year return on investment for commercial on-site systems.

Residential or commercial storage systems should be promoted. They would contribute to the balance of the grid.

The study suggests various adjustments: adjustment of tariffs paid by utilities for excess electricity exported to the grid, time-of-use electricity prices, "aggregation" payments to households and businesses, and a "feed-in tariff" to the grid. These include adjustments to rates paid by utilities for excess electricity exported to the grid, time-of-use electricity prices, "aggregation" payments to households and businesses for the use of their storage systems, and demand charges imposed on businesses for electricity consumption during peak hours.

Editor's note: Rooftop installations will have to be considered if developers have difficulty finding large areas available. Moreover, local production for local consumption can only be well received. On the other hand, local production calls into question the current electricity network. This is probably why the focus is not (yet) on these installation possibilities.
