Study to achieve 40% solar by 2035 in the US

The US Department of Energy is studying the possibility of achieving 40% solar power by 2035, compared to the current 3%. This prospect would require

accelerate the deployment of residential, commercial and utility-scale solar installations. Deployment should increase three to four times by 2030 to meet President Biden's goal of creating a 100% carbon-neutral electricity system.

He calls for the continuation of the investment and production tax credits (ITC and PTC). There is also a need to expand tax incentives for energy transmission and storage (along the lines of the solar ITC) to leverage billions of dollars in private capital.

The department highlights the need to increase US production capacity, which currently stands at 3 GW of silicon panels and 2 GW of thin-film panels, an amount that will be increased by First Solar's new 3.3 GW plant in Ohio.

It also plans to make significant investments in research and development.
