Hydrogen in brief: Rystad doubts hydrogen prices will fall; BMW tests

Despite Australia's advantages, Rystad Energy says it will be difficult to achieve a 75% reduction in the price of hydrogen.

capital expenditure to make green hydrogen competitive with fossil fuels.

The government supports the green hydrogen project and has set a target of $2/kg.

Rystad Energy has evaluated the cost of 100 MWh of electrolysis powered by current solar PV and wind technology. They concluded that the capital cost of the total system, i.e. the electrolyser, photovoltaics and wind, should be reduced by 75%.They concluded that the capital cost of the total system, i.e. the electrolyser, PV and wind, needs to be reduced by 75% and the capacity factor improved in order to meet the government's target of $2/kg of hydrogen.

The price of electrolysers is likely to fall as they begin to be produced on a large scale. On the other hand, the cost of solar or wind electricity would have to fall by 50% as the industry begins to mature. Electricity makes up the bulk of the LCOH. The consultancy estimates that the average cost will still be higher than the $2/kg target. Hence the conclusion: "there must be a change or subsidy, even at scale, to replace the current production of hydrogen by steam methane reformation."
