Prices :: Silicon to exceed RMB 200/kg in June

The trend according to PV InfoLink on 26 May Silicon to exceed RMB 200/kg in June

Silicon:

Silicon shortage to increase further in June as a number of furnaces shut down

for maintenance. Its price will rise again

This week, major manufacturers signed long-term orders, with negotiation prices rising sharply to RMB 195-220/kg; some orders were even signed at RMB 225/kg; current prices are at RMB 200-205/kg. In overseas markets, where prices are higher, prices have risen rapidly to $27.50-28.50/kg

The outlook is uncertain: silicon wants to go up but panel manufacturers do not want a price increase and are further reducing production. This is prompting traders to stop raising prices and stockpiling silicon.

The industry is concerned about the scarcity of panels in the second half of this year and next year.

Wafers:

An earthquake hit LONGi which was close to the epicentre. It reduced global wafer supply by 1 GW. Prices in May reflected this event and followed the rise in the price of silicon. These two phenomena accelerated the shift to 170 µm wafers in Q3.

The shortage of silicon is reflected in multicrystalline wafers priced between RMB 2.35 and 2.50/piece.

Cells:

Reflecting the upstream increases, Tongwei raised its prices on 21 May by 9-10% from the prices introduced on 11 May, with G1 cell prices at RMB1.1/W, M6 and G12 cell prices at RMB1.08/W.

Cell prices have risen above RMB 1/watt. The G1 format is trading between 1.07 and 1.1 RMB. Smaller manufacturers are even offering prices 0.02 to 0.03 RMB higher than those of the larger manufacturers. The price of M6 and G12 cells reaches RMB 1.08/W.

Cell capacity utilisation rates will remain at about the same level next month due to the shortage of wafers; in the meantime, foreign manufacturers will not be able to acquire enough wafers, which will put cell manufacturers in a difficult situation.

Average prices for multi-Si cells jumped to RMB 3.85-4/piece, driven by upstream price increases and despite a rather balanced supply-demand relationship.

Panels:

Prices moved more slowly than silicon, wafers and cells. Sales prices have mostly remained between RMB 1.73 and 1.80/watt for monofacial panels above 500 W.

Panel manufacturers are suffering from the upstream increases without passing them on, which has reduced their profits. More manufacturers will reduce production in June.

Overseas markets will see a price increase of $0.01/W, bringing prices for panels above 500 W above $0.24/W.
