Silicon prices continue to soar

Silicon prices have risen again in recent weeks, according to new data from the China Semiconductor Industry Association (CSIA) and Taiwanese market research company PV Infolink. This week, its price reached

RMB 124 ($18.9)/kg (+48% in three months), up from RMB 103/kg a month earlier (+20%), and RMB 84/kg in early 2021. All major silicon product categories have seen prices increase by around 45% since the beginning of the year. Market demand grew rapidly in the first quarter, with new Chinese PV installations amounting to 3.25 GW in the first two months of the year, according to the National Energy Administration (NEA). The CSIA expects the upward trend in polysilicon prices to continue.

China's largest solar cell manufacturer, Tongwei, announced its prices for April on Thursday. With the sole exception of its multicrystalline cell, whose price rose by RMB 0.01 to RMB 0.63 per watt, prices for all other products fell. The price of its 158.75mm mono cell decreased by RMB 0.02 to RMB 0.94 per watt, and the 166mm product (M6) decreased by RMB 0.14 to RMB 0.86 per watt. In addition, the price of the new 210 mm cell (M12) decreased by RMB 0.13 to RMB 0.91 per watt. The prices of the 166mm and 210mm cells are now lower than those at the beginning of 2021.
