In brief in R&D: INES, MIT, Fraunhofer in Chile, hydrogen storage by EWE

INES has manufactured a 10 cm² perovskite mini-solar panel with an efficiency of 18%. The perovskite layer is formed at a temperature below 100 degrees Celsius.

It is then integrated into the panels using laser ablation as the structuring process. The time required to deposit the perovskite layer on an M2 wafer is estimated to be approximately 30 seconds.

The manufacturing process is easy to scale as it combines an air coating step followed by a gas quench conversion step to form the desired perovskite material.

Scientists at the American MIT claim to have obtained a perovskite solar cell by adding a special conductive layer of tin dioxide bonded between the conductive layer and the perovskite material. The resulting efficiency rate is 25.2%.

The Fraunhofer Institute has found that the lowest cost of energy in Chile is achieved by a combination of large-scale photovoltaics and concentrated solar power (CSP). The best PV-CSP configuration, with 13 hours of storage and no restrictions on electricity generation, achieves an OEL of $53/MWh, while natural gas technology, with a plant factor of 85% and a variable fuel cost of $2/MMBtu, has an OEL of $86/MWh.

The German energy supplier EWE wants to build a test cavern for hydrogen storage with a capacity of 500 cubic metres at a depth of 1,000 metres. Commissioning is planned for spring 2022 in Rüdersdorf near Berlin.
