R&D at a glance: Ipfen and the Eagle project; two-dimensional energy circulation; Imec; efficient panels

Coordinated by Ipfen, the EAGLE project studied the pre-chamber ignition system for ultra-poor mixes, the use of new materials

intelligent coating for thermal insulation and hydrogen injection. These areas of study have been evaluated experimentally and have shown promising results. This resulted in very low pollutant emissions in exhaust gases (below 50 g CO2/km according to the WLTP standard).

Editor's note If pollutant emissions can be halved or reduced by half or more, this means that petrol-powered vehicles still have a bright future ahead of them. They would thus resist the appeal of electric vehicles for longer.

Russian and Italian researchers have used titanium carbide to study the two-dimensional energy flow in perovskite cells, called MXenes. The cells were constructed with an inverted configuration. This would have increased the efficiency of the cell by more than 2%.

The Belgian research institute Imec has developed a new interconnection technology. This is a three-dimensional encapsulation fabric with embedded welded horizontal and vertical metal tapes (see photo). Mini solar modules built with the proposed technique have given interesting results in reliability tests of thermal cycles, showing very limited degradation.

Polish scientists sought to determine which signs were the most effective depending on the weather conditions. Amorphous silicon panels offer the best answer in stationary projects or when installed on facades. Crystalline silicon and CIS solar panels are the best choice for trackers.

The choice between double-sided or single-sided panels depends on the albedo. Developers should be aware of the albedo of the locations where they are going to install panels. The correct albedo value makes the difference to a project.

The American NREL proposes to use satellite data to determine solar radiation, with a spatial resolution of 4 km.
