Confirmation, tandem cells reduce average energy costs

According to German scientists from the Fraunhofer ISE and the HZB, in almost all cases, perovskite-silicon tandem cells reduce solar costs below what could be achieved with silicon alone.

Fraunhofer evaluated the performance of different types of silicon cells

with a perovskite upper cell. They looked for ways to increase the energy efficiency of solar energy, and to reduce manufacturing or deployment costs. The manufacturing costs were based on those of existing silicon production; the LCOE chosen was that of a fixed-tilt silicon installation in Southern Europe.

In all cases, the tandem cell improved the LCOE. In addition, the differences between the silicon cells were minimal and were all within the uncertainty parameters of the study. The scientists mentioned that they did not know the lifetime, degradation rate and financing conditions of the tandem configuration and could not refer to the reference PERC panel. The study states that assuming a 30-year life span, a tandem assembly would have to operate for at least 21 years to have a lower OEL than the current generation PERC technology.
