The use of more nickel in batteries faces complications
To avoid the extensive use of cobalt, which causes serious environmental damage and which comes 66% from a single unstable country, battery manufacturers want to use more nickel. Only such nickel-doped lithium ion batteries, which are only subject to
faster and deeper failures. The researchers found that some of the cathode material becomes fatigued after repeated charging and discharging of the battery, and that the amount of fatigued material increases as the cycle continues. After prolonged use, the atoms on the surface of the material rearrange themselves to form new structures that are no longer able to store energy.
